When you are on your computer and you get a message that pops up from a program called defense center telling you that your computer is infected with various viruses, malware and spyware for most people this is something that can easily send them into a panic.
If you are not very well acquainted with the inner working of your computer you may think this is genuine. This is exactly what the programmers of this so called “anti-malware” software’s are counting on. Because what you see on your screen is actually a malware program designed to look like a legitimate anti-malware program that has found vulnerabilities on your computer.
The truth is there is nothing on your computer. The report defense center provides you with is totally fake. But if you go ahead and follow the instructions from that pop up window, then that’s a totally different story.
What will happen then is it will ask for payment to upgrade to the full version and take money from you for a piece of malware which does nothing except damage your computer.
Now, there are all different types of malware out there that range from simply annoying to dangerous. This particular version is one of the more difficult ones to track down and get rid of. Why? Because one of the first things it does is disables your windows task manager. When working properly the task manager will give you a breakdown of what programs are running in the background of your computer, tell you how much processing power and memory it is taking up. If you knew what you were looking for in that list you could easily locate it and turn it off.
The second thing it will do is go through and find any other anti-virus or anti-malware programs on your computer and start uninstalling them, telling you that they are infected and need to be removed from your computer. This will generally happen rather soon after the initial installation of the malware so that it can prevent being identified as a risk.
If you do have this malware n your computer it will once again come up with a fake report telling you that there are harmful viruses or malware on your computer. In reality these so called “infected files” are vital files your windows operating system needs to run properly.
It may either ask you to automatically delete these files or for you to go in and manually delete them. The same thing will happen when you try to run any other program on your computer trying to make sure you do not locate the true cause of the problem.
The whole reason for this process if simple, to scare you enough that you want to purchase their “fake” anti-virus or anti-malware program. With that information in their hands plus any other personal information their program grabs off your computer you could quickly find yourself in quite a bit of trouble.
Now, you could try to manually go through your system and remove the program along with the registry entries. The first thing you will need to do is to stop defense center running. The only way to do this is to start your computer in safe mode then enable task manager by changing the following registry entry.
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesSystem “DisableTaskMgr” = “1″
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionpoliciessystem “DisableTaskMgr” = “1″
you need to locate these two with the windows registry editor and then change the value from one to zero.
Once you have done this task manager will work and you can start it by pressing the CTRL-ALT-DEL keys together then go the processes tab and disable the entries for defcnt.exe and uninstall.exe this will stop it running
Here is a list of files associated with the program that you will then have to find and remove:
c:\Program Files\Defense Center
c:\Program Files\Defense Center\virus.mp3
%UserProfile%\Desktop\Defense Center.lnk
%UserProfile%\Desktop\spam001.exe
%UserProfile%\Desktop\spam003.exe
%UserProfile%\Desktop\troj000.exe
%UserProfile%\Start Menu\Programs\Defense Center\Activate.lnk
%UserProfile%\Start Menu\Programs\Defense Center\Buy.lnk
Once you have done this you will then need to find any entries for defense center in the registry including the ones below and delete them
